Barbara Warren will have Welsh Black beef which has been hung for three weeks, so deliciously tender. The beef will be sold from the counter or by the box as well as some smoked bacon from here pedigree Tamworth pigs.




The latest news from Celia at Penrhiw Farm
Just to remind you of our market whereabouts this coming weekend and beyond and what we have to offer.  It's Rhiwbina on Friday, Usk on Saturday and Riverside on Sunday - as usual - but there are changes for the next couple of weeks.  There will be Rhiwbina as normal on Friday the 9th Oct but no Riverside on the Sunday (11th) due to the rugby world cup.   We will be in Caerphilly on Sat 10th October (in the Twyn hall).    This week, we will have our usual fresh beef, lamb, mutton and pork as well as fresh chickens.  Sausages and burgers too as well as faggots and pies.   Local deliveries and collections from the farm by arrangement.

We are enjoying the current lovely spell of weather.  On Cefn Coed, ploughing is finished - grass seed will all be sown by the end of the week.  Just need some warm rain (!) to ensure this gets a good start before the onset of winter.  A new crop for us - forage rye, sown to provide an early spring bite, has germinated and is starting to grow, turnips too - the pigs love these !   At Penrhiw, we have been busy with the sheep and spreading the well rotten farmyard manure on the hay fields to replenish the nutrients used up by the hay crop. 
The TB tests are all done and dusted with no problems - a huge relief.    It's the Nelson Ram sale on Friday - the BIG day for our South Wales Mountain yearling rams.  We always think they look good at home but .......... time will tell what the buyers think.


Bread at Usk Market 

Since the retirement of Totoise Bakery, the market has trialed a number of local bakeries with the aim of ensuring the market offers a range of quality artisan breads.  Tortoise suppled a full range encompassing sour doughs and slow rise biga breads of exceptional quality.  Riverside Sour Dough will be providing bread at this market and we are going to trial having two suppliers at the October 17th market to cover the range of preferences that have been indicated by customers.


Stop Press

I can not attend tomorrow's market as I have an abscess on the root of a tooth. On antibiotics but the swelling is getting worse so I have to get an out of hours appointment this evening .
