Christmas wrapped up at Usk Farmers' Market
A present for that special Christmas person (or awkward relative..)? Look no further than Usk Farmers' Market. Fill a generous hamper or compile a neat little package of goodies that you've hand-picked from the fine produce available on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the market in the Memorial Hall in Usk, (10am to 1.0pm.)
A jar of local honey and a honey dripper? Some home-made Turkish Delight or chocolates, maybe? A hand-turned cheese board, with Single Gloucester cheese, home-made chutney and some Fairtrade crackers? Maybe a bottle of local cider, too? Some Naughty Nibbles and hand-made soap in a pretty package as a thank-you gift for a favourite teacher? Or a packet of fine tea and some Christmas biscuits to encourage the Christmas cook to sit down for five minutes with their feet up?
On three markets in November and December (November 18th, December 2nd and December 16th) you can have your present wrapped and be-ribboned to give it that extra sparkle; free of charge, though donations to Cancer Research welcome. And while you wait, how about a cup of tea or coffee and a tempting home-made cake from the Market's very own “coffee lounge.
Of course the Market's range of fine fare is not just for gifts or your own Christmas table: throughout the year the regular first-and-third-Saturday sessions include goods from highly acclaimed local businesses and producers, many, like Welsh Farmhouse Apple Juice, and Trealy Farm Charcuterie with prestigious awards to their name. There are field-fresh fruit and vegetables from local organic growers, beef that's been hung for 28 days, cakes and bread freshly made for the market, plants, pastries and poultry, fresh fish, free range eggs and smoked salmon, ... delicacies that “foodies” travel miles to enjoy, and that Usk connoisseurs are lucky enough to find on their own doorstep.
And to tide you over the weeks in between the markets, Paul's Organic Veg. have their own Veg Box Scheme with various sizes of box from £10. (paulsorganicveg.com)
